The Monster Elk, Venison Sliders, and Christmas Ideas

Capt. Kirk decided to head back to South Carolina for some time in the stand, so the show was left in the capable hands of Jeff and Kevin.  They were in great shape, because there was so much to talk about: great fishing, the continuation of deer season, and finding some great deals on gear that’s been marked down for the Christmas season!

The true highlight of the show, however, was when Paige Bichler joined us to share the incredible story of the monstrous elk she took down not far from her home in Montana.  The pictures blew up our Facebook page, and her telling of the tale, as well as her perspective on life in Big Sky Country, is just as intriguing.

In this episode, we talked about trailer hitch maintenance.  So often, we have so much on our minds and we’ve got so much to watch out for when it comes to our boats and trailers, the hitch gets taken for granted.  The guys’ advice to you: DON’T!  Pay attention to that hitch and give it the love it needs!  Make sure you’ve got the right parts, that everything fits properly, and that everything stays properly lubricated.

 

 

Sugar and Spice Candied Nuts

Ingredients

1/3 cup dark-brown sugar
2/3 cup white granulated sugar
1 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
Generous pinch of cayenne pepper (or 1/4 teaspoon of hot smoked paprika)
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 pound walnut or pecan halves or whole peeled hazelnuts
1 egg white, room temperature
1 tablespoon water

Directions

Preheat oven to 300 degrees. Mix sugars, salt, cayenne, and cinnamon, making sure there are no lumps; set aside. Beat egg white and water until frothy but not stiff. Add walnuts, and stir to coat evenly. Sprinkle nuts with sugar mixture, and toss until evenly coated. Spread sugared nuts in a single layer on a cookie sheet fitted with parchment paper. Bake for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from oven, and separate nuts as they cool. When completely cool, pour the nuts into a bowl, breaking up any that stick together.  Enjoy!
