Fishing Forecast: Out With The Old…

It was the last show of 2020, and Capt. Kevin finished up in grand style…by staying at his hunting property in Georgia!  But that didn’t phase Capt. Scott, who called on our good friend Capt. Chip Wingo to sit in and talk about the difference between the weather forecast and what actually happened.  It was a mixed bag by the day, but the important question is this: what’s in store for First Coast anglers this week as we limp into 2021?  Listen in to find out.

OS 1148: The Big Chill

With temperatures in the 30s, the guys managed to shiver their way to the studio for the show.  Well, except for Jeff, who was up in Georgia dealing with temps in the 20s!

As you would guess, the show kept coming back to the gear and the tips you need to get you through the chilly side of the outdoors experience.

Here’s your L.V. Hiers gear tip of the week: Mr. Heater Buddy works awesome in a box stand!  It’s available at Bass Pro.

Here’s your Ring Power CAT tip of the week: Be on the lookout for big sales on hunting gear today and through the new year!

Here’s your Kirbyco Builders Inc. cooking tip of the week: Jeff made a rib roast and fried his Christmas turkey in this week! For all the juicy (and we mean juicy!) details, listen to this episode closely…

Fishing Forecast: Oh The Weather Outside Is Frightful…

Just a couple days shy of Christmas, Capt. Kevin and Capt. Scott were talking about the VERY chilly weather fixing to show up on the First Coast.  But how is the changing weather going to affect the fishing?  The answer – and the forecast – may surprise you.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you!

OS 1147: Have A Holly Jolly…

With Christmas just under a week away, of course the guys had gift ideas on their minds.  So there was plenty of talk about great gifts, not-so-great gifts, and just plain odd things to find under the tree (or the big stuff that just gets a big red bow on it).

In hunting news, Kevin shared a great story about “The Second Chance Buck” – and when we say “great”, we mean GREAT…like an all-time classic, and you want to make sure you hear it.

Here’s your L.V. Hiers gear tip of the week: Gill boots for cold weather…get yours for around $50 online.

Here’s your Ring Power CAT tip of the week!  Plant trees now, during the dormant season…not in the spring.

Here’s your Kirbyco Builders Inc. cooking tip of the week: Need something hearty, hot and easy!? Here you go…Crockpot Mexican Street Corn & Chicken Chowder!  Click HERE for the recipe.

Fishing Forecast: Ready for Ice Fishing?

Okay, so maybe “ice fishing” is a little bit of an exaggeration, but that chill in the air, on the wind, and and in the water is no joke.  Capt. Kevin and Capt. Scott talk about the stark contrast between last week’s heat wave and this week’s frigid feel, and they give you the rundown on where to go, when to go, and what to plan on catching with this week’s forecast.

OS 1146: Great Fishing and Big Laughs

‘Tis the season…for fishing!  After a serious cold snap, the weather has taken a positive turn, and the fish are absolutely loving it.  The conditions are perfect for amazing in-shore and offshore fishing.  Tune in to check out all the species that are getting hooked – the list is amazing.

Bigger than fishing updates and hunting info, however, were the laughs.  This episode had us doubling over from beginning to end, and this show may be worth listening to twice.

Here’s your L.V. Hiers gear tip of the week: Cracked VHF antenna? Kirk experienced just that this week.  Listen in to get the story (it’s a cringeworthy one), and then find out how his quick fix, which included Rustoleum 2x Ultracover Paint+Primer, got him back on the water!

Here’s your Ring Power CAT tip of the week: This is awesome! You can download the app for your remote control on your Minn Kota. Bluetooth it and you never have to worry about spare batteries, getting the remote wet or worse… dropping it in the water! You now have a backup on your phone!

Here’s your Kirbyco Builders Inc. cooking tip of the week: Gigi’s roasted, salted Christmas pecans!

1 lb bag of shelled pecans
1 egg white
1 Tbsp water
1 tsp salt
1 cup of sugar
1/2 tsp of cinnamon
1/4 tsp nutmeg
Cooking spray

Place pecans in a big mixing bowl.

In a separate bowl whisk egg white and water until fluffy. Add to pecans and mix until they are all coated.

In a separate bowl mix salt, sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg. Add sugar mix to pecans and make sure you turn until all are coated.

Use a rimmed cookie sheet. Spray lightly with non stick cooking spray. Spread pecan mixture evenly on cookie sheet.

Bake at 250 degrees turning pecans every 15 minutes for one hour or until all are ‘dry’.

Remove from oven and let cool.

Put in bags, mason jars or Christmas containers. These make great Christmas gifts! Jeff loves his crushed up on top of Blue Bell vanilla ice cream!

Fishing Forecast: Wishing for Fishing

Capt. Kevin and Capt. Scott didn’t have an opportunity to hit the water very much this week, mostly due to the lack of charters.  But that didn’t stop them from ACHING to get on the water, because the conditions were so nice!  Now the question is this – as we get closer to Christmas, is the weather going to be a gift for us?  Listen in to find out!

Programming Note – if you listen to the show on the radio, the show will air on the following dates in December: Thursday 12/17, Wednesday 12/23, Wednesday 12/30.

OS 1145: Stories, Tips, and Knowledgeable Wisdoms

Somebody on Team OS is absolutely jones-ing to get a buck, and that means the guys have to change their show strategy.  Which team member, you ask?  Jeff’s wife Tera!  After her close encounter with a Georgia Monster during Thanksgiving weekend, she HAD TO get back to the hunting property to see if she could manage another experience.  So, if Tera needs to go, Jeff goes with her…but, thanks to the wonders of modern technology (yeah, it was a phone, but we wanted to make it sound all tech-y), he still performed his host duties.

And although Jeff wasn’t in the studio, the show didn’t skip a beat – great stories about bucks, bears, offshore and inshore fishing, the crazy cold weather, and of course, a heaping helping of food talk, too.

Oh…and about that “knowledgeable wisdoms” thing – we’ll leave that explanation to Capt. Kirk, our resident wordsmith.  lol

Here’s your L.V. Hiers gear tip of the week: In freezing cold weather…. on a long sit or fishing the cold water in winter…. Thermos makes a miniature version that is small and compact-able (not sure if that’s even a word, but what the heck.)! $29 at Bed Bath and Beyond.

Here’s your Ring Power CAT tip of the week: Throw a glass cleaner in your backpack for cleaning your glasses, binoculars and your scope! Really comes in handy when it’s cold and foggy!

Here’s your Kirbyco Builders Inc. cooking tip of the week: Use local, raw honey as a sweetener instead of sugar. It’s good for you and also helps with allergies! Jeff’s favorite is gallberry. What’s yours!?

Fishing Forecast: ‘Tis The Season To Be…Chilly!

YIKES!  It has been downright FROSTY here on the First Coast for the past couple of days, and boy, has it had an effect on the water…and the fishing.  Find out from Capt. Kevin and Capt. Scott what it’s done, what’s it’s doing, and what kind of effect this deep freeze (almost) is going to have on fishing this upcoming week.
