OS 1160: Return of the Velvet Fog

As pretty much everyone noticed, the First Coast was covered in fog this week, and at times, things got pretty creepy.  The guys talked about it…well, Capt. Kevin and Capt. Kirk talked about it.  Jeff was dealing with some velvet fog of his own – he was recovering from a cold, and boy, did he sound funny.

The good news was that turkey season is now officially underway.  Jeff shared his story about bagging his first of the season, and Kirk shared his story of, well, almost bagging his first.  But don’t be fooled – the story is fantastic, even though it didn’t end with a gobbler getting folded up.

One important note: not saying this episode was built to go sideways, but when Kirk brings in the best rum cake ever baked…

Here’s your L.V. Hiers gear tip of the week: Make sure you wear hearing protecting when you’re doing Spring yard work! Find these at your local Hagan Ace Hardware.

Here’s your Ring Power CAT tip of the week: Courtesy of Captain Leon Dana!  Captain Leon was helping someone get their boat on a trailer but did a bad job tying his own boat up and it ended up drifting away. A good reminder to check your knots.

Here’s your Kirbyco Builders Inc. cooking tip of the week: Jeff doesn’t cook without Casamigo Tequila!  Although unconfirmed, this may even be true when tequila isn’t on the ingredient list…

Fishing Forecast: Never Seen This Before…

If you’ve listened to the Fishing Forecast for any length of time at all, you can safely say that Capt. Kevin and Capt. Scott have pretty much seen it all.  And what they haven’t seen, they know somebody who’s seen it.  With that said, we come to this week’s episode, in which they both admit they have NEVER seen conditions like this for a time span this long.  Capt. Ricky, who sat in with the guys, agreed wholeheartedly.  So what are those conditions, and will this week’s weather help the situation?  Listen in to find out…

OS 1159: Stranger Things…in the Outdoors

Strange things are happening in the water and in the woods as the guys reconvene in the Outdoors Show Studio for this episode.  The weather has been odd, so the fish are odd, and even though the show hit the air on the first day of turkey season, the mysterious whipping wind was making a the prospects of a successful hunt VERY problematic.

As the episode rolled on, the guys got into some hog talk, and Jeff relentlessly crushed Chris about his 50th birthday.

Here’s your L.V. Hiers gear tip of the week: It can still get cold in the spring turkey woods so carry some of these Grabber Hand Warmers!

Here’s your Ring Power CAT tip of the week: Looking at the forecast for opening of turkey season, windy and some rain. This is not the time to be quiet! Hit your calls more regularly and louder. Don’t be afraid to hit those calls!

Here’s your Kirbyco Builders Inc. cooking tip of the week from Chris: We just brought the Ninja Air Fryer Max XL home to Wayne Manor. It does EVERYTHING from wings to fries, roasting and broiling, and you can even make turkey jerky with it!

Fishing Forecast: The Wind and the Worms

So Capt. Kevin and Capt. Scott are getting a little fired up…because business is about to pick up.  ABOUT to pick up.  Why hasn’t the spring of spring sprung just yet?  Could be the wind, could be the worms.  Yes, the worms.

Get the scoop on this episode, and get the forecast to find out if you’ll be getting fired up over the next seven days!

OS 1158: Let The Gloating Begin…Again

With the 2021 El Cheapo in the books, Team Lageman managed to pull of their 2nd STRAIGHT 2nd PLACE FINISH!  Dave Edwards, the man who hooked the 11.75 lb. monster, called in to talk all about the catch, the funky lure he used, and the depression that settled in after he found out the tournament winner beat him by .01 POUNDS!

Rodney Augustin, the kayak angler who wound up with the biggest sheepshead of them all: 12.77 lbs!  Listen in to find out why, in all the excitement, he had the ultimate “D’oh!!!” moment…

Here’s your L.V. Hiers gear tip of the week: DeHookers good for flopping fish off the hook.

Here’s your Ring Power CAT tip of the week courtesy of Captain Steve! Very clever idea!

Here’s your Kirbyco Builders Inc. cooking tip of the week: Don’t buy tarter sauce when you can make your own! A heaping scoop of Duke’s Mayo, a heaping scoop of Wickles relish and a dash of A1 sauce…mixed all together is the best ever!

Fishing Forecast: The Spanish Are Coming!

We know what you’re thinking, but no, Spain has not declared war and tried to recapture Castillo de San Marcos.  Okay, maybe you’re not thinking that.

The water temps are climbing, and Capt. Scott is beginning to see spanish jumping, which is good sign that spring is, well, springing, and the fishing business is about to pick up.  Capt. Kevin and studio guest Capt. Ricky chimed in, and of course we heard from the usual cast of characters.  And you can’t call it a Forecast without talking about the weather forecast, so you’ve got that too!

OS 1157: LIVE for the El Cheapo!

It’s El Cheapo time!  And every year, that means the competition between Capt. Kirk and Jeff is ON!!!  As for Capt. Kevin, it was time for him to hang out with his Fishing Forecast co-host Capt. Scott Shank at Consignment Boat Sales for their annual live shindig!  They were also joined by old OS friend Capt. Bill, who was able to share all the El Cheapo details.

If fishing is your thing, this show is loaded to the gills for you (sorry about the pun)!!!

Here’s your L.V. Hiers gear tip of the week: From reels to lines to hooks and nets and rigs and much more… head to Hagan Ace Hardware and check out their fishing and marine department. The Grand Opening is happening in Yulee today and tomorrow… 85880 Miner Road. Plus you can enter to win a $3800 Old Town Sportsman Motorized Kayak, 3 grills, a Yeti and more! — at Hagan Ace Hardware.

Here’s your Ring Power CAT tip of the week: With all the north and south winds we’ve had lately it makes it difficult to fish. To make it a little easier try and fish spots where the wind is bucking the tide. In other words… don’t fish where the wind and current is running in the same direction!

Here’s your Kirbyco Builders Inc. cooking tip of the week: When you are busy, in a tournament or just don’t feel like making anything… Do what Jeff did for the El Cheapo. Call ahead to Angies Subs Official Page and have Ed Malin make you a bunch of subs to-go. Life saver. Time saver.

Fishing Forecast: Introducing…MR. WAHOO!

If you’re a regular listener to the Moe’s Southwest Grill Fishing Forecast, you’re probably familiar with Capt. Ricky, a frequent in-studio guest with Capt. Kevin and Capt. Scott.  You’re probably also aware that our hosts affectionately call him “Rookie Ricky”.  Well, Capt. Ricky has earned a new nickname: Mr. Wahoo.  Now, if you don’t know why, and you want to know the story about his new moniker, this show is a must-listen!  Here’s a teaser: on his soon-to-be legendary trip, his first fish was 55lbs…and that was the SMALLEST one.
